Due to the high volume and complexity of its work, the New Jersey Senate divides its tasks among 16 different committees. These committees are responsible for reviewing bills, as well as hearing what members of the public have to say about them. During the review process, the committee makes an initial determination as to whether a proposed bill should go forward in the legislature. The committee can suggest amendments to the bill, approve it for further action by the full Senate, or disapprove it. If the bill is approved, the committee is then responsible for managing Senate deliberation on it, as well as reconciling the bill with the version passed by the State Assembly.
